Tunku Kamariah Aminah Maimunah Almarhom Sultan Iskandar debuts her inaugural solo exhibition in an intimate set up.
Explosions of colour greeted guests as they entered the hallway that led to the inaugural solo exhibition of Tunku Kamariah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah binte Almarhom Sultan Iskandar, Tunku Puteri Johor.
The intimate event, hosted by Datuk Seri Farah Khan at her residence, was the debut of Tunku Kamariah’s By The Illumination of the Moon art exhibition, a splendid self-curated set of art works that are a mix of sound, light and felt pen.
Tunku Kamariah, who has a degree in interior architecture and was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate in Creative Leadership from Lim Kok Wing University, collated a series of four elements in her exhibition: Life, Love, Drama and Tradition. Each series embodies the contextual whimsy that is Tunku Kamariah’s signature. Bold strokes and brilliant electric hues are married with light and a canvas of butter paper, and the pieces need to be viewed via a framework of light, which is integral to the artworks created.
“It’s impossible to say where the work begins and I end, because I am in a constant state of flux when it comes to art: it’s my joy, my salvation, my revelation. I am most myself, working late at night, in a cocoon of light, sound and colour,” said Tunku Kamariah, who is a trustee of the Sultan Iskandar Johor Foundation, which supports underprivileged scholars in their education and research endeavours. She is a patron of P.S. The Children and an ambassador of the Asian Liver Centre at Stanford University in the United States.
“There are so many individuals and bodies out there doing great work to support communities that seriously need help. I do what I can to support each and every one that comes to me. If it’s related to art then, of course, my heart sings a little.” The guest list was by invitation only, made up of the members of the royal family and close friends of Tunku Kamariah. Guests observed SOPs throughout the event and only removed their masks briefly for photographs.
